I Didn’t Get the Job and It Was a Great Experience!

When we think about job interviews, the end goal is usually a job offer. But what if you walk away empty-handed yet still feel enriched by the experience? That's precisely what happened to me during my interview process with CarGurus. Spoiler alert: I didn't get the job, but I gained so much more.

A Flawless Application Process

It all started when I decided to revisit an opportunity with CarGurus. Two years ago, a recruiter from the company had reached out to me, but the timing wasn't right back then. Remembering that initial connection, I decided to reach out on LinkedIN.

To my surprise, the recruiter promptly responded and passed my information along to the recruiter responsible for the current position I was interested in. From there, the process was seamless. The new recruiter reached out almost immediately, and their approach to scheduling the initial phone screen was both responsive and incredibly well-organized. They provided clear instructions, outlined what to expect during the call, and was flexible with timing, making the entire setup effortless on my end.

Their professionalism set the tone for what would become one of the most positive interview experiences I've ever had. It wasn't just about filling a slot in their calendar; it felt like they genuinely valued my time and wanted to ensure I was comfortable every step of the way.

The Phone Screen: Setting the Stage

The initial call with the recruiter served as a phone screen rather than an actual interview. This preliminary conversation was designed to gauge my interest in the role, understand my background, and answer any questions I might have about the company or the position.

During the call, they delved into my past experiences, asked thoughtful questions, and provided more details about what CarGurus was looking for in a candidate. The conversation flowed naturally, and I felt at ease discussing my career aspirations and how they aligned with the company's mission.

What stood out was her transparency about the role and the interview process moving forward. They laid out the next steps clearly, ensuring there were no surprises down the line. This level of openness made me even more excited about the possibility of joining the team.

Seamless Scheduling with the Hiring Manager

After the positive phone screen, I received an email inviting me to schedule an interview with the hiring manager. The email included a link to an open calendar where I could select the times that best fit my schedule. This self-service approach to scheduling was incredibly convenient—it eliminated the usual back-and-forth emails trying to coordinate availability.

I appreciated how straightforward the process was. I simply chose a few time slots that worked for me, and that was it. A day or two after I submitted my availability, I received a confirmation email. It detailed the exact date and time of the interview and included the name and position of the person I would be speaking with.

This prompt and clear communication left no room for confusion. Knowing who I would be talking to allowed me to prepare more effectively. I could research the hiring manager's background and think about how my experience aligned with what they might be looking for.

The efficiency of this scheduling process further solidified my positive impression of CarGurus. It was evident that they valued my time and wanted to make the interview experience as seamless as possible. This level of organization and respect is something that, unfortunately, isn't always common in the job application process.

Resources to Learn More About CarGurus

In preparation for my interview with the hiring manager, I received an email that not only confirmed the date and time but also included several resources to help me learn more about CarGurus. This thoughtful gesture provided me with a comprehensive look into the company's culture, values, and what it's like to be part of their team.

Having access to these resources not only helped me prepare for the interview but also made me feel appreciated as a candidate. It demonstrated CarGurus' transparency and their desire for potential employees to understand and align with their company ethos from the outset.

An Interview That Felt Like a Conversation

The interview with the hiring manager was nothing short of refreshing. From the moment we connected, They made me feel at ease. We kicked things off by sharing stories from our experiences in IT—those "dumpster fire" situations that every tech professional knows all too well. They even showed me a "dumpster fire" challenge coin she had purchased to give to a co-worker. In return, I shared a dumpster fire image that I had generated using ChatGPT and had set as my desktop background. This mutual exchange of humor instantly broke the ice and set a relaxed tone for the rest of our conversation.

As we delved into the core of the interview, they asked pointed and insightful questions about my past projects and experiences. After each response, they followed up with questions like, "What did you learn from that experience?" or "How would you approach that differently now?" These prompts encouraged me to reflect more deeply and provide thoughtful answers, turning the interview into a meaningful dialogue rather than a one-sided interrogation.

We also chatted about the company's new office in the Back Bay area and their hybrid work policy. It was a delightful surprise to share that I had attended high school in that very neighborhood. This personal connection added another layer to our conversation, making it feel even more personable and engaging.

By the end of the call, I felt a mix of emotions. While I sensed that it might not have been my strongest interview performance, I deeply appreciated how honest, caring, and thoughtful the interaction was. Unlike many interviews that feel sterile or scripted, this one was genuine. The hiring manager wasn't just ticking boxes; she was genuinely interested in getting to know me and understanding how I could fit into the team.

I left the call feeling grateful for the experience. It reminded me that interviews can be more than just a means to an end—they can be opportunities for meaningful connection and self-reflection.

The Follow-Up: An Unexpected Opportunity for Feedback

After the interview, I made sure to send a thank-you email to the hiring manager. In my message, I expressed my sincere gratitude for the opportunity to learn more about CarGurus and the role. I highlighted how much I appreciated her insights into the IT organizational structure and the challenges the team is addressing. I conveyed my enthusiasm about the prospect of collaborating with her team to implement structure, foster collaboration, and empower team members to reach their full potential. I also mentioned how the company's culture and leadership approach resonated with my own management philosophy.

Four days later, I received the email that no job applicant ever wants to see—the one informing me that I wasn't selected to move forward in the interview process. However, this rejection letter was different from any I'd received before. The recruiter wrote:

"I was able to get some feedback from the team on your recent interview. Unfortunately, we've decided not to move forward at this point. I know this isn't the outcome you and I were hoping for, and I am more than happy to share specific feedback.

Would you be interested in setting up a quick call this week to discuss or receiving feedback via email? I really appreciate your time and interest in the company, and I hope we have a chance to connect so I can provide more context."

What struck me was the genuine empathy in her words: "I know this isn't the outcome you and I were hoping for." It wasn't a generic, impersonal rejection; it felt sincere and considerate. But what truly shocked me was her offer to share specific feedback. In my experience, it's rare for companies to provide detailed feedback to candidates who aren't moving forward. The standard practice is often a brief, canned response that leaves you guessing about where you might improve.

Naturally, I was eager to hear their insights. Feedback like this is invaluable for personal and professional growth. It provides an opportunity to understand areas where I can improve and better align myself with the expectations of future roles. The fact that CarGurus was willing to invest additional time in my development—even after deciding not to proceed with my application—speaks volumes about their company culture and how they value people.

This unexpected offer turned what could have been a disappointing moment into a positive learning experience. It reinforced my respect for CarGurus and left me with a sense of gratitude despite not getting the job.

Constructive Feedback: A Surprising Opportunity

Eager to hear the feedback, I reached out to the recruiter, and we set up a call for that same day. During our conversation, she shared that the hiring manager had really liked me and appreciated my skills and people management experience. However, there was a concern that I didn't have extensive experience with some of the core systems they used. Additionally, they felt I might be a bit too senior or overqualified for the role as it was currently defined.

They mentioned that I would be better suited for a higher-level position—one that unfortunately didn't exist at the time I applied. While it was disappointing not to move forward, the candid feedback was invaluable. It provided clarity on where I stood and how my background aligned with their needs.

Every now and then, I'm pleasantly surprised by experiences that restore my faith in the job application process. In today's fast-paced world, such genuine interactions are few and far between. This entire process with CarGurus reinforced that some companies truly focus on the total candidate experience. They work hard to exemplify what good looks like in recruitment—transparency, empathy, and respect.

Closing Thoughts

Though I didn't get the job, the experience was overwhelmingly positive. From the flawless application process and the engaging interview to the thoughtful feedback after, CarGurus demonstrated a level of professionalism and care that is all too rare. It reminded me that the journey can be just as valuable as the destination.

I may not have secured the role, but I gained insights, made meaningful connections, and reaffirmed my belief that organizations like CarGurus value people above all. For anyone navigating the job market, remember that each experience is an opportunity to learn and grow—even if it doesn't end with an offer letter. Sometimes, not getting the job can still be a great experience.
